Bookable Access Facilities and How To Apply

We provide personal assistance tickets for customers who would otherwise be unable to attend the venue. These are on an individual and show-by-show basis. We would ask that you contact the venue in advance on the email above, with the name of the show in the subject line, and we will deal with your request. In some cases evidence may be requested to support a personal assistance ticket request. We would expect that Personal assistants remain in the venue with their charges.

Unfortunately, owing to the size of the venue and the siting of the fire exits, we are unable to provide a viewing platform. For seated shows we can provide space and safe access for wheelchairs - please notify us in advance of the show.

For customers with a medical requirement for seating, this must be orgnised in advance by emailing info@wedgewoood-rooms.co.uk. Seating is limited and due to Health & Safety reasons will be at the very back of the venue. Please note visibility will be limited

Travel Guide

Unfortunately the venue has no dedicated parking. Parking is on the side streets around the venue. There are however some sites close to the venue for Blue Badge holders. We request that you do not use your Blue Badge directly outside the front of the venue, as this may restrict access in the case of emergency. If you arrive by taxi then it is safe to be dropped off outside the front of the venue. If you need assistance at this point please ask a member of security at the entrance. If arriving by train then the nearest station is FRATTON, which is situated approximately half a mile from the venue. Our CONTACT page provides a google map of the venues location.

Arrival Guide

Door opening times are printed on the tickets, and are usually around 7.30pm. We endeavor to open the doors on time, but sometimes soundchecks may overrun, in which case we will notify any customers outside of the building. On arrival at the venue there may be a queue to gain access. If you require any help with entry to the venue please ask a member of security staff, who can be found by the front door. In some cases we can arrange early access to the venue for customers with access needs if we are given prior notice via email. If you bought your ticket from the venue then we will scan it in order for you to gain entry. If you have a smart phone then we can scan your screen. Please do not bring a screen shot of your ticket as our scanner can be a little sensitive. We would also request that you have some form of picture ID which we may check.

Toilets

Accesible toilet facilities are on the far side of the venue from the main entrance, access is via the main toilet corridor and is on ground floor level. There is a short bending corridor and the accessible toilet is in the first indent on your left. We do not currently have the radar key system in place but we do have easy to use handles and locks.

A second accessible toilet can be found in the Edge of The Wedge and is open for most shows..

Customers with Medical Requirements

We welcome customers who need to bring medicines, medical equipment, food or drink to manage a medical condition into the venue. We request that you notify us in advance if this is the case. Most of our Security Staff are First Aid trained should there be an emergency, however all of our staff will be happy to help.

The box office is open for general telephone enquirys from 10.00am to 4.00pm, Monday to Friday, not for ticket purchases.

No. We have stopped doing this initially owing to Covid Guidelines. If a show is SOLD OUT will there be tickets on the door?

In short no - We do not keep any tickets aside.

I bought tickets online, can I pick them up from the Box Office before the show?

If you have ordered a ticket from our website you will be sent an e-ticket which you can bring to the show. No - you can show your e-ticket on your smart phone and we will be able to scan you in from that. We like trees so this is our preferred option.

I ordered a ticket from you online, and haven't received an e-ticket?

Please make sure you check your junk mail and spam folder before contacting us. Searching for 'Musicglue' (the ticket agency) might be more effective than searching 'Wedgewood Rooms' or the artist who you have paid to see. We will cancel your tickets and issue you with new ones (original e-ticket will be void)

Please note if you are reselling a ticket purchased via MusicGlue

Your MusicGlue ticket can admit more than 1 customer per ticket. Ideally, please resell MusicGlue tickets for the quantity stated on them to reduce any risk.

Re-selling tickets online at above the face value is ticket touting, which harms both artists and venues. Anyone we find selling their tickets at more than face value will have their tickets cancelled and may be barred from making further bookings for our shows. Purchasers please be aware that if you are buying tickets from secondary sellers, that they are not above the initial face value. Original prices can be checked by contacting the venue here CONTACT.

Music Glue are the independent ticket agency that we work in partnership with to process your ticket purchase. Whilst we have your name, email address and ticket purchase information, we do not have any information about your address or the credit card used. About Us

The Wedgewood Rooms, also known as 'The Wedge' , is a 400 capacity Independent Live Music Venue located in Portsmouth, England. The venue has been nominated for the NME’s best small venue award three times and regularly hosts national and international touring acts, comedians, club and tribute nights.

More recently we’ve added film festivals, quiz nights and independent theatre to our program. Our smaller venue The Edge of the Wedge, (attached to The Wedge), regularly hosts local acts, smaller touring acts and DJs.

The Wedgewood Rooms and its small team have helped turn Portsmouth into a primary destination for many artists and comedians on the touring circuit, becoming a hub for Portsmouth's creative arts communities in the process. The overall aim is to provide the community of Portsmouth with a unique, independent space in which to experience and perform alongside some of the UK's most exciting and cutting edge touring artists

We love what we do, we hope that you do too.

You can explore our history via the VENUE HISTORY page and listen to acts who have played the venue over on SPOTIFY

Community Interest Company

The Wedgewood Rooms is a not-for-profit Community Interest Company (CIC) with a trading arm.

The CIC's main purpose is primarily one of community benefit rather than private profit.

The specific aims of The Wedgewood Rooms CIC include:

  • Managing and providing local venues and performance spaces to enable musicians and other creative artists to showcase their work.

  • Providing a programme of events that will allow opportunities for local residents to access regular live performances, including music, theatre and comedy. Delivering a diverse music and cultural programme is at the heart of this.

  • The CIC works closely with charitable groups providing them with event space for fundraising activities, as well as helping to develop a skills base within the groups and working in partnership on specific projects.

  • The CIC works with local educational establishments to provide facilities and space for the development of their creative arts students, as well as helping the students with their understanding of a professional music and creative environment.

We are proud to help and support all aspects of the community in which we live.

Environment

Inspired by recent events we have made a pledge to become more environmentally friendly.

We stopped using plastic straws in 2017, but since then we have made a commitment to achieving the following:

  • Reducing our carbon footprint by converting all our lighting, both around the venue and on stage to LED

  • Increase the level of recycling of waste.

  • We have introduce a deposit scheme on branded plastic glass ware that is designed for multiple use, to reduce our environmental impact

  • We will also take advice on how we can become more respectful towards our environment.

VENUE HISTORY

One of Southsea's oldest landmarks, The Wedgewood Rooms served as a storage space in WW2, a ballroom, a jazz club and a community function room where famously Arnold Schwarzenegger competed in a body building competition in 1968. It is as a music and comedy venue however that The Wedgewood Rooms gained its international reputation. Since launching in 1992, it has seen some of the world's biggest international touring artists take to its stage, earning a reputation as one of the UK's most prestigious independent venues. Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees, Mercury and Brit Award Winners have been regular visitors to the venue since the early 90's.

LIVE MUSIC

Photos by Paul Windsor Photography

For almost 35years The Wedgewood Rooms has been at the cutting edge of music in Portsmouth. Working in partnership with independent regional promoters PVC, it has built a legendary reputation as arguably one of the best small venues in the UK, playing host to some of the biggest bands and breaking new acts into the world; Oasis, Pulp, Stereolab, Jeff Buckley, The Strokes, Muse, Twenty One Pilots, Catfish & The Bottlemen, Biffy Clyro, Paloma Faith, Barenaked Ladies all played shows on their way to success. The list is endless and reveals the huge range and diversity of talent on display at The Wedge.

Photos by Paul Windsor Photography

Even after bands go on to fill large capacity venues and stadiums they often return to the cozy confines of The Wedge for festival and tour warm-ups. Portsmouth music fans have been lucky enough to spend an intimate evening with Primal Scream, Kasabian, PJ Harvey, Gorillaz, James, Feeder, Placebo, Supergrass and Razorlight to name a few. Most recently Billy Bragg performed a residency with us, playing 3 sold out shows, while legends like Buzzcocks, Johnny Marr, Damon Albarn, Lee Scratch Perry, and Thurston Moore have dropped in for special events. We were also blessed to witness one of the last live shows from Joe Strummer.

Photos by Paul Windsor Photography

Along with the touring acts there is a strong emphasis on local band nights which help give acts from Portsmouth and the surrounding area a wider fan base and a leg up on the music ladder. Since 1992 we’ve aimed to encourage and support new talent, providing support slot opportunities when available and hosting an annual Showcase for local bands. Many of which go on to secure support slots with touring acts and recognition within the local music community. Some have gone on to headline their own sell-out shows here as part of a larger UK tour. With the addition of a smaller sister venue The Edge, newer and local acts are offered a unique space to perform in and promote their own shows. This is also a great place for promoters and photographers to hone their craft.

For more info on the local scene visit the GET A GIG section of the venue info page

COMEDY

From Jack Dee to Jack Whitehall the biggest names in comedy all launched their careers at the Wedge: Portsmouth's original and oldest Comedy Club! Over the years many household names have graced the trusty boards at the venue as part of a national tour, or at our fortnightly Wedge Comedy Club in collaboration with Off The Kerb Productions

Initially starting as a comedy venue way back in 1992, The Wedge has played host to a plethora of up and coming acts who would go on to achieve huge success. The impressive list of comedians who are now regulars on both the small and silver screen include Mark Thomas, Bill Bailey, Eddie Izzard, Lee Evans, Dara O'Briain, Tim Minchin, Russell Howard, Jo Brand, Michael McIntyre, Mark Lamarr, Rich Hall, Tim Vine, Romesh Raganathan, James Acaster, Tom Allen, Ronni Ancona, Omid Djaili, Rory Bremner, Frank Sidebottom, Brendon Burns, Rob Newman and many, many more.

In addition to the Comedy Club, our Comedy On Tour shows allow comics the chance to drop in on their latest UK tours; an opportunity to catch the very best up-and-coming, and established, comedians in the world of comedy today! Recently we’ve been visited by Rob Newman, Simon Evans and Flo & Joan to name a few.

TRIBUTE BANDS

Everyone has their favourite all-time band but unfortunately not everybody will be lucky enough to see them play live.

The Wedge plays host to many tribute bands that bring the music and atmosphere of the original band to the stage. Whatever style of music you enjoy, chances are we have a tribute act for you! Long gone are the days when tribute bands were seen as cheap or corny copies, cashing in on the success of the original artists. These days they are professional outfits that spend time and effort studying their chosen performer and rehearsing to get every sound as close to the original as possible.

No wonder acts such as the The Smyths, The Total Stone Roses, Limehouse Lizzy, Oasish, Dirty DC, , and local favourites Fleetingwood Mac and Rhythm Of The 90s keep coming back to packed houses. We pride ourselves on booking the very best tributes and if you're sceptical about tribute acts, you won't be after seeing this lot.

Tribute shows give you an opportunity to enjoy the music and soak up the kind of atmosphere that only good musicians can create, and to re-live the artistry of bands long gone.

THEATRE, FILM & SPOKEN WORD

Whilst The Wedge is renowned for its live music and comedy, it has a long history of staging cutting edge theatre and spoken word events.

The first venue in the City to stage The Vagina Monologues, we have become the Portsmouth home of Townsend Productions who, over the last few years, have brought theatre shows including the one man magic lantern show The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists to our stage. Recently the Certain Curtain Theatre Company brought their highly acclaimed production Lady In Red to the venue, a domestic abuse drama in support of local support services.

Spoken word events have featured Portsmouth debuts from Tony Benn, Howard Marks, Simon Yates, Julian Cope, Jello Biafra and Benjamin Zephaniah. We’ve also been involved in several independent film events working with the 48 Hour Film Challenge and Making Waves Film Festival.

CHARITY EVENTS

Photo (right) by Russ Leggett

We’re proud to work with some amazing local promoters and charities to raise funds and awareness for multiple causes.

Annual events like Southsea Christmas Covers, The Southsea Alternative Choir, The Big Fat Quiz and the Annual Foodbank Gig raise thousands for charities every year.

We’re also the home of a Be Yourself a night in conjunction with Gig Buddies. These nights are designed to encourage the inclusion of individuals with disabilities and are an accessible event for everyone.

If you would like to know more about the venues accessibility or how to hire the venue please go to the VENUE INFO page.

MY DOG SIGHS

Dog House Studios is the latest addition to The Wedge, and is the studio, and new home of Portsmouth based artist MY DOG SIGHS.

After 10 years of giving his art away for free as part of the now infamous Free Art Friday project, Southsea based MY DOG SIGHS has found himself strapped in to a well-deserved meteoric rise. With an international following in the US, Israel, Japan and of course the UK, sold out shows under his belt, and a strong following of staunchly loyal fans on social media; MY DOG SIGHS is fast becoming an important figure on the contemporary art scene. His style bounces between melancholic and often naive portraiture; his now iconic painted tin cans, and glassy reflective eyes hiding secret narratives. The Dog House Studio is a liberating environment which not only gives him a space to explore and refine his creative practice but also a point of contact for locals artists to meet, share ideas and join forces.
