Briar & Bramble are a contemporary folk duo composed of Mike Turnbull & Kate Hewson.
Mike Turnbull is a multi-instrumentalist who has the knack for writing well crafted songs with a story to tell. With his trademark tenor guitar, Influences are taken from his home region of the Lakes, around the UK & beyond.
Together with Kate Hewson on mandolin & Shruti box, the Briar & Bramble sound & style is original modern folk ranging from melodic ballads to the more upbeat, catchy, singalong, festival style pleasers.
The duo weave songs and storytelling together, with Cumbrian influences being the main stay of their material. Other influences are in the form of folklore far and wide, from the British Isles and Scandinavia.
Discography to date: Circlet of Gold 2017, In so small a Compass 2019, Courageous Tree 2020,
Two Kingdoms 2021 and Rum Tales 2024. https://miketurnbull.bandcamp.com/
Mike Turnbull is a singer-songwriter from the Lake District whose main instruments are tenor guitar, banjo, mandolin & octave mandola. Their sound coupled with the sources of his songs suggests Seth Lakeman and, in truth, that isn’t a bad comparison. He certainly has the same
drive and energy (Dai Jeffries - Folking.com)

Together we play my material, new & old, keeping things minimal yet with atmosphere. Great for small venues, festivals & theatres.
I play my trademark tenor guitars, along with mandola, mandolin and kick drum. Kate plays mandolin, tenor guitar and shrutti box.
