The First of May Band

About News Listings Contact Music Downloads Videos

The First of May Band features the radical songs of resistance of Birmingham’s veteran performer and cultural activist, Dave Rogers, supported by musicians Vince Pryce, Fred Wisdom and T. Their music, an eclectic mix of folk, blues, reggae and ska, celebrates resistance to oppression wherever it occurs, drawing on the experiences and struggles of ordinary people. With a combination of searing lyrics and ferocious satire, they call out those responsible for the imposition of ‘Austerity’ and anti-migrant sentiment. They have built up a wide following amongst those involved in trade union, anti-racist and social justice struggles.

"Dave’s songs are alive with social purpose and deal with burning issues that affect the majority. They are powerful and true songs all written by a man who is a political activist of the highest order." Peggy Seeger, singer, musician and songwriting activist.

"Wonderful, passionate and committed, and really funny too." Jimmy McGovern, screenwriter, producer and creator of the TV dramas, Priests, Cracker, The Lakes and The Streets.
