Doughnut Productions is bringing its 5* production of Speaking in Tongues to the Edinburgh Fringe.
Thank you! We’ve hit our target! We are going to EDINBURGH! If you’re reading this and you’re thinking “Oh shoot, I didn’t get to donate and I REALLY wanted to” then fear not, there are still ways to help! You might be looking at this and thinking anything over £10,000.00 means we’re over funded and will just spend it on beers. We wish! That’s far from the case. Since drafting our budget and launching this campaign in April we’ve been hit with some unexpected costs that we still have to cover, these include:
We also haven’t put anything in our budget for expenses for the team whilst up in Edinburgh for the month. None of us are earning a wage from this show and so any extra money from our crowdfunder, once all the other stuff has been covered, will go towards our living costs. If you’d still like to show us some support, think of us handing out our flyers in the rain and chuck us a few bob for a coffee. We’d be eternally grateful.
We are a team of creatives who have been working together in the unique Doughnut Theatre space on Speaking in Tongues by Andrew Bovell. Following two highly successful runs at The Cockpit Theatre in London, we were invited by The Pleasance to perform in one of their spaces for the entirety of the Edinburgh Fringe 2017.
The Pleasance is a fantastic venue and we are honoured to be performing alongside high profile comedy and theatre acts in their programme. So…what makes our show unique and how will we stand out amongst all the other performances that you can see at the Fringe?

Well firstly, our show inverts the concept of theatre-in-the-round, placing the audience right in the centre of the action on swivel chairs allowing for a 360 degree perspective. You can spin and follow which parts of the narrative or which characters intrigue you the most as the actors perform on all four sides around you.
Secondly, we will be presenting the two halves of this fascinating play as separate pieces. From 7-8pm audiences can see Speaking in Tongues: The Lies and from 8:15-9:15pm this will be followed by Speaking in Tongues: The Truths. We believe this offers a new perspective for audiences on how to see this play. They can see one part, both parts and in either order as the stories stand alone but are also utterly intertwined.
Caps must be doffed to director Kathleen Douglas for being bold and forthright with a subject that deserves no less. Her talents have been well served by a consummate cast.

Four marriages become entangled in a web of love and deceit, the threads of which threaten to strangle them all. Spin and watch as two couples grapple with infidelity and in doing so unwittingly reveal a much more sinister scandal.
A husband doesn’t pick up the phone. A neighbour gets home late. A past lover unexpectedly appears. A woman goes missing. Who knows what happened? Spin and watch as this web of love and deceit draws together a seemingly random group of strangers with dire consequences.
As for use of swivel chairs and reverse theatre-in-the-round to tell this story, I can assure you that this technique is no gimmick, as it enables the audience to be completely immersed in the storytelling. By the end of the play you realise how emotionally involved you were throughout – exhausted, but in a good way. Certainly worth making the effort to see if the play is showing again in your neck of the woods.

Taking a show to Edinburgh Fringe is a costly venture for any company and particularly for a company such as ourselves. We do not receive any public funding and we are unable to apply for any specific grants from the Arts Council as these are not applicable to the Edinburgh Fringe.
Before we can even think about anyone getting paid for their work we need to cover rehearsal space hire, travel to get from London to Edinburgh, accommodation, travel for the team within Edinburgh, marketing costs, venue costs, insurance and more.
Bearing all these challenges in mind, Edinburgh Fringe is still an incredible opportunity for us. It gives us a platform like no other to get our work out to a much wider audience. Edinburgh is the largest fringe festival in the world and we have been scheduled to perform at one of the 4 main venues for the whole of the month of August. This gives us a fantastic ability to connect with programmers and producers who can help us to expand our reach, as well as helping us to gain a whole new audience. We are also excited about the prospect of gaining some high profile reviews for the show as this is something that is harder to achieve in London with only a short run.
This is where you come in, every little bit counts towards making all of this a reality. We've got a gripping show that audiences are getting to experience in a whole new way, it's time to unleash this and take the swivel seats as far and wide as possible. Take a look at the options opposite for the ways you can help and to see just what a difference any donation will make.
