Stood at 6’3, when entering the room Shem Antony holds an enigmatic aura around him. At the age of 24, Shem AKA Shemzy has carved out a signature artistic lane that has drawn attraction from tastemakers from London’s infamous concrete jungle to ‘New York, New York’, the city that’s so good, you have to say it twice!
As a young kid growing up in East London, Shemzy was forever surrounded by music; with his Aunty and cousins in award winning Gospel group, ‘Raymond & Co’, his mum playing Al Green records, and his dad singing Reggae songs. It’s no wonder that Shemzy has always had an affinity with music. His influences span from Soul to Dance music, from Michael Jackson to UK’s own, Sway Dasafo. This exact juxtaposition is evident in his music. The fusion of a Grime setting, outstanding vocals and the ability to reach out to a varied audience gives Shemzy a niche that he himself has created. The iron cage between music genres have been lifted and a unification is vocalized. Having gained quite some traction with ‘Radar’ produced by friend and frequent collaborator Musical D, Shemzy has set his eyes on 2015 as being his year. Spending months working as a songwriter and producer for other artists, it’s now time for him to release his much anticipated forthcoming EP entitled, ‘In The Dark’ Dark' which is set to drop later this year. Shemzy’s ability to switch between melodies and raps is seamless, and ‘Man Right Now’ is a perfect example of what this young, talented artist is capable of.
Asked to describe his latest single in 5 words, Shemzy retorted, ‘ A Way Outta Self Doubt’. This is typical Shemzy; you would think that a single boasting, ‘I feel like the man right now’, was simply a club banger, but Shemzy’s secret weapon is double entendre. His clever way to create both a meaningful and mainstream record is second to none. Man Right Now is a self produced track peppered with neck snappin’ snares and bass heavy 808’s knockin’ that when matched with the infectious hook, it’s sure to have crowds singing-along, be prepared for every man, woman and child proclaiming that they’re the ‘man right now’!
