Leaf - Pick n Mix EP (Part 1)
Leaf makes a sticky return to the Serial Killaz label in the form of his 2 part Pick ‘n’ Mix EP. It’s an extra large bundle of frantic breakbeats that Leaf seems to have crafted into his own versatile sound. Trademarking to the point of recognition is no easy task, however, this EP really does showcase that it’s still possible.
‘Bumbaclart’ introduces the EP with some nice top ended brass samples, hectic reggae influenced vocals and jolly swing beats. Combine that with a humongous single note bassline that takes over the track to the point of wiping out the whole entire dance floor and you’re onto a winner from the off.
‘Wu Style’ comes freshly laced up with a VIP and will no doubt appeal to diehard fans that will instantly recognise the siren sample used in a ton of early 90’s tracks. It’s rugged vocals link perfectly into the breakdown and the short stab snare is certainly reminiscent of Leaf’s earlier influences. If you liked the VIP, check the Monsoon EP for the original.
Experimental rolling vibes by the bucketload in the aptly named ‘Rolls’ is up next. Spiked out basslines take a trip on trademark style beat composition which both really live up to the name of the track.
Switching things up totally in the form of ‘Horror’, Leaf takes us on an audio trip into the dark side not forgetting to add that all too familiar slice of vocal stabs and weird percussion effects into the mix.
‘Hard to Find’ featuring the vocal talents of Alice Winzar is probably the standout track on the EP for me. Combining Leaf’s destructive yet well thought out production with attitude infused female vocals works wonders here. Probably not quite commercial playlist ready, Leaf sticks to his roots and caters for the underground scene adding layers of mucky bass to the mix.
