MALKY is Bulgarian and means „little boy“. MALKY are the singer Daniel Stoyanov and pianist and producer Michael Vajna.

As a child Daniel emigrated with his parents from Bulgaria to Germany. He found his passion for singing and is 13 years old by the first time he is being recorded in a studio. At 19 he is playing his first gig with a live band and as backing vocalist he supports various big pop-bands. From the very beginning one thing is clear: it’s all about music.

In Mannheim Daniel meets Michael who is sharing his world view. Michael has Hungarian ancestors. The Balkan and the yearning for „home“ is common to both of them. They are an inseparable team – brothers in the spirit, so intimately connected that they do not many words to understand one another. They know what the other one thinks, they are almost like one.

Together they write songs for various German Pop-Stars but working for other artists does evoke questions about one’s own life. The has to be more than this production line of mainstream material. They move together to Leipzig to break free from the orders and expectations of others, to step out of their com- fort zone, to start anew and to find their very own personal sound. Now the focus is not anymore on commercial functionality but on their own inner voice, on coming to terms with their own histories and on developing their own potential.

Concepts of the past and recommencement are at the core of the MALKY-universe. They are studying and dis- secting passionately the sound of the 60’s and re-combine everything in a new way. This is why it would be wrong to label them as „retro“. On their debut album they are jumping between the past and the present and are interweaving classic rhythm’n blues songwriting with subtle electronic elements and new lyrical commentaries.

With MALKY they renounce big effects and dare to bridge a gap. This creates a pop music that is deep, that takes its roots from Motown and the Beatles but also from contemporary music.

With their own label, Eighty Days Record, they release their first single and EP „Diamonds“ in 2013. „Diamonds“ is a melancholic Soul-ballade with which the band leaves a remarkable impression but makes one thing very clear: MALKY’s Soul is not only the sweaty, thrilling and moving sound of the big Motown hits, but it can also be melancholic, slow, thoughtful and dark. It is a Soul that shines like a diamond but is fragile like thin glass.
