Circa 1995, the UK started to develop an underground D.I.Y music scene. Teenagers were working with professional agents to book full time touring bands. Fanzines were in circulation providing press in a pre-internet age. Shows sprung up in community centres, churches, shipping containers, abandoned abattoir’s and anywhere else you could (or couldn’t) fit a P.A. and a crowd. “Kids” where responsible for every aspect of the scene, and chose to do this purely out of a need for this type of music and to push a positive message.

One of the bands at the forefront of this scene was Lightyear.

Injecting punk, hardcore and pop influences into their songs they rapidly became one of the most dynamic, enjoyable and outrageously unpredictable recorded and live bands in the UK. Whilst becoming infamous for their pranks which saw them invading Ice-t and Body Count’s Reading festival show dressed as a pantomime horse and being chucked off the Jack Ass tour, amongst other foolery, they struck a chord on a much deeper level with their surprisingly deep lyrics and at times clever and intricate song writing.

It was a golden era of innocence, passion and debauchery.

And it was never truly documented.

Until now.
