The Colour Of Whisky

"If ABBA wrote folk songs..."

No member of The Colour of Whisky lives or, to the best of our available knowledge, has ever lived near the sea but it's a recurring reference in lyrics and music for this new Glasgow based 4 piece. Maybe it’s the romantic memory of mariners past, with short days on land and a thirst to slake that draws us to the ocean.

There is also to be found here a warm melancholy, a feeling of nights shared around a fire with communal song and the spirit of shared loss and celebration, brought to life on acoustic guitars, banjo, flute, piano and 4 part vocal harmonies. Biff Smith, Katie McArthur, Jo Shaw and Paul Tasker have collectively played in many bands over the years, but this is their first collaboration together. Drawing from country music, classical, blues, gypsy, folk and a bit of flamenco too, everybody contributes from their varied musical histories to create an eclectic blend of lyrical storytelling.

If you want to solve an intriguing mystery, try to define the unique sound and presence of the elfin-minded Lewis singer songwriter Miss Irenie Rose.

Showing an affinity for both matters acoustic and loop pedal, her voice danced over her songs like she had been blessed with the pagan power to invoke joy through the simple expedient of making music. She is, to put it simply, enchanting

Tildon Krautz

Husband and wife team Gregg Weiss and Gabi Swiatkowska lead the French quartet Tildon Krautz. With NYC anti-folk roots and postpunk string-band sound they create music that borders on roots and folk, dipping into some jazz and blues. Fun songs with intelligent lyrics comparable to contemporaries Danny Schmidt, Devon Sproule and the Rail Splitters, this show is full of light hearted joy.

The Colour of Whisky

With inspiration from an older sibling, (Elsa Jean McTaggart) Miss Irenie Rose, a singer-songwriter from the Isle of Lewis who is said to have a voice like Joni Mitchell, decided to give music a try. Since then, she has supported both local and touring artists, played festivals across the country, and made multiple radio and television appearances.

Some of the artists she has supported include Nathaniel Rateliff, Pete Roe, Ben Howard, Rachel Sermanni, Rae Morris, Manran, Larkin Poe, John Smith and KAN.

In early 2013 she took part in a documentary about Celtic Connections presented by Julie Fowlis and was nominated for best newcomer in the Scottish Alternative Music Awards. Irenie also reached the semi-finals of the Radio 2 Young Folk Musician of the Year Awards 2014.

She has a four track demo out which can be found through bandcamp and facebook.
