Treasury Library Canada was initially intended to be a trio of EPs, 5 songs each (the song which was cut is called ‘Sir Daniel, Painter of Empty Landscapes’ and came out on the BALLADEER album). But somewhere along the lines it became a record unto itself, and somehow hung together incredibly well as a solid piece. We’d done a bunch of touring for Songbook and – at that time, at least – I didn’t really feel that the road was quite the place where I’d wanted to be. So it was back to the studio, picking from over 100 songs I’d written and plucking out the best ones. ‘Anna, Girl in the Clocktower’ came from a rock opera we’d done called Redbeard about gay pirates, performed once. ‘The Hamilton Academicals’ was obsensibly about a Scottish football team, but more about my own Scottish heartbreak. ‘Emma et Hampus’ are two amazing friends – rays of sunlight – from Sweden who got a rather dark song named after them. Even now, no matter where I play, people ask to hear ‘7th Fret Over Andres’, although I find the song kind of embarrassing… My favourite memories of Treasury Library are hand-making all of the covers for the first 1500 or so, and selling all of them out of my closet as we self-released this thing first. Somehow during the recording of this batch of songs we also became a somewhat more confident and polished live mechanism and this is when things really got interesting for a while. This record just makes me think back and smile about what it’s like to be in a young band.
