Thumbtacks + Glue is Woodpigeon changing paths and changing focus. As happens with any collective, folks start getting married, having kids, getting jobs that keep them safe from ridiculous tour scheduling (like that time we played Glasgow, Dublin, Edinburgh over the course of 3 days, or the night we slept in a bus station in Gothenburg after having played at the Way Out West Festival). There’s still elements of the old epic group here – especially in ‘Hermit’, which was kind of a farewell to the band we’d made – but I became more interested in the power of the spaces between the notes, or in the reverberations and aftershocks of sounds vs. the sounds themselves. I wanted the record to play as a transition, where the first few songs could be easily digestable as their own pieces and then the second half of the record shifts into new territory. ’Sufferin’ Suckatash’ is my love letter to David Bowie. ‘Edinburgh’ and ‘Robin Song’ are final nails in a coffin of a life I had – or maybe just thought I did. ‘Thumbtacks + Glue’ is a song that I’m most proud of and the most telling of the sounds I was chasing. The crazy feedback on the song is actually a rhodes piano put through some pedals and delay, then looped and spun backwards and forwards live to tape. I would have loved to have taken that rhodes on tour and just build swells like that for 45 minutes a show. Thumbtacks was also the first Woodpigeon record written specifically to fit onto 12” vinyl, an editing time limit that I’ve found incredibly helpful since then. (Although I’ll always miss the two songs we cut: ‘Emotorik’ and ‘Yakub’, but at least you can get them on the download).
