THE SPINS – Colours

A French/English/Estonian pop/rock group? Whatever next?

Based in France, but with members geographically separated, there’s no clue as just how much of an active ‘group’ they are, but the The Spins are a curious mix – Italian drummer Alessia Mattalia (who ‘hammered’ the skins on Jeff Beck’s Hammerhead), Mai Agan (bass) – mostly known for her work with Estonia pop ‘sensation’ Kerli - Italian band ‘leader’ and composer Marcello Giordano (keyboards, backing vocals), French guitarist Ludovic Briand, and our own Amy Danielle a singer/songwriter from Mannchester.

If the line-up is bewildering, then so is their new EP. ‘Hole in The Ground’ opens with an almost funk beat, swirling keyboards, throbbing bass lines, big brash guitar chords, and moody female vocals delivered at barely above talking pace.

It’s moody and beguiling. ‘Colours’, with male lead vocals and it’s vaguely Beatles echoes doesn’t fare as well, and ‘I Wish You’ and ‘Inertia’ take a pretty decent stab at Eurovision pop with some crunchy glam guitar, and girlie vocals. ‘Never Let It Go’ wraps matters up with Giordano and Briand showing off their Queen influences.

They may not set any tremors running through the industry, but The Spins serve up a perfectly respectable, brand of pop. ***
