Handsome Tours is proud to present the debut of Philadelphian indie pop artist Japanese Breakfast with a show in Melbourne on Saturday 9th December at The Curtin. Japanese Breakfast is the solo musical project of Michelle Zauner, travelling with her band to Australia for the first time. It’s hard to put a finger on Michelle’s music, despite the distinguishing marks. Several things are in orbit at once: zigging, zagging, hither and yon. That she manages to hold it all together is awe-inspiring. A self-taught master’s apprentice. Her debut was forlorn and heartbreaking, written in the weeks after her mother’s death, dealing with the personal by retreating into the confined space of bedroom sounds.
On her 2017 album, ‘Soft Sounds From Another Planet’, the horizon expands, mainly up. It’s the sound of a songwriter ascending – literally and figuratively – via an album about travelling to the stars to find solace in outer space. A cosmic perspective on the earthly and everyday. “The songs are about human resilience and the strength it takes to claw out of the darkest of spaces,” says Zauner. “I used the theme as a means to disassociate from trauma,” she explains. “Space used as a place of fantasy.” The distinctive notes range from modern pop production to 60’s nostalgia, all the while being rooted in that grand ol’ American indie rock format. It’s one of the most rewarding full album experiences we’ve had this year.
