Gang Of Four
Formed in 1977 and within two years delivering their epochal ‘Damaged Goods’ debut EP and the genre-defining ‘Entertainment’ album, there’s still no other band in the world that’s quite as tight, quite as angular, quite as uncompromising. Icons and inspiration for many of the world's biggest acts (REM, U2, Rage against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers), they also serve as direct stylistic antecedents of today’s guitar heroes (step forward Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party, The Rapture, Radio 4, Liars et al).
Gill (guitar and vocals), producer of such globe bestriding rock behemoths as The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Killing Joke, Michael Hutchence, Bono, Jesus Lizard, the Futureheads and the Young Knives, has strapped on his trusty Stratocaster to provide the anguished riffs and driving chords that send extraordinary singer and lyricist King diving and contorting across the stage. They are joined in the studio and on stage by bass player Thomas Mcneice and Mark Heaney, veteran of such bands and artists as The Shining, Jacknife Lee and The Klaxons: a drummer of surgical precision.
The band always sounded years ahead of their time and now this is their moment, with tracks featuring on films by directors such as Michael Moore and Sophia Coppola, a host of new imitators and emulators, and a fanbase swelled by new adherents.
