'A great album' Jools Holland

The album is a truly independent release and the whole project was orchestrated by Tallulah who not only runs her own label but manages herself and is responsible for every aspect of the creative process, including the concept of releasing the album as a book.

Recorded at Hookend Studios, formerly owned by David Gilmour and the erstwhile home of Radiohead, Morrisey and The Manic Street Preachers, ‘Alive’ retains that vital, magical ‘live’ feel whilst affording every individual intricacy of Tallulah’s song writing the glorious clarity which it richly deserves.

For Tallulah the creative process is not exclusively musical and ‘Alive’ is much more than just an album. She chose a dozen artists and sent them each an album track as a starting inspiration for an exclusive piece - and it is this ongoing aesthetic detail that sets Tallulah apart. Each song is lovingly crafted and accompanied by a piece of art that explores and elucidates the themes of that track. Collaborators include Kilford The Music Painter who sees music in colours and has painted alongside the likes of Iggy Pop, Black Eyed Peas and The Charatans, the writer Danae Brook who wrote a mini play inspired by the track and Patti Smith who she interviewed in the ‘70’s, the performance artist Amy Richardson-Impey, jewellery designer Bex Rox, photographer Charles Moriarty and one of Britain’s principal sculptural artists Andrew Logan. Madonna’s brother Chris Ciccone crated a painting for the remix of ‘Ghost In The Water’.

The CD comes in a beautiful hardback book with a DVD documenting each artist’s interpretation of their song and interviews with them. The book is written by Tallulah and tells the story of the making of the album and each collaboration.

Possessed with a pervasive strength, the songs rise into soaring, expansive climaxes with Tallulah’s voice a mesmerising constant. The music is ethereal yet powerful, delicate and yet vociferous in its insistent, intricate and beautifully orchestrated sound.

Despite this power there remains a delicate femininity and lightness of song writing on ‘Alive’ demonstrative of a breadth of creative talent and an instinctive mastery of light and shade which brings to mind musical influences from Patti Smith & Jeff Buckley to Martha Wainwright.

“a soaring and mesmerizing vocal presence combined with theatrical prowess lying second to none is the centre piece of an incredibly special body of work.” James Blake
