Welcome to the Splinter Legacy Project, and we are very happy to see you here, for this legacy is like no other.
Splinter are one of the world's most underrated and recognised groups, and this is nothing of their own doing. Yes their lifeline goes right back to 1972 when they formed the duo in North London, Tufnell Park to be precise and not their native Newcastle Upon Tyne in North East England.
They graduated from a small beginning and after several adventures (more of which will be revealed later), they found themselves recording for George Harrison's Dark Horse label and released their first world critically acclaimed album The Place I Love. This yielded the fine best selling single "Costafine Town", the you tube video of which you will find here and at our sister site www.splinterlegacy.com .
Due to the success of this album they undertook world tours and recorded two more albums for Dark Horse before reaching out for further climes. They signed for Bellaphon Records from Germany and recorded their last album Splinter in 1981. This album is available here on our on line shop. The label went into liquidation soon after and when Dark Horse closed its doors, there was no outlet for any of their recorded output, save for albums in Japan.
This made the duo's material impossible to obtain, rarely played on the radio, and this remained so for the next 39 years until 2018.
Various contacts were made and quietly cemented until actual contact was made to both members of Splinter, who were very reluctant to return to the music industry. Several promoters had offered them chances, but they both turned them all down as it did not suit them at all.
The band's previous material was quietly re-packed on CD for the first time, and when contact was made this time by Radio Broadcaster Nigel Pearce the Legacy Project was set up with the great help of Robin Ayling from Gonzo Multimedia who saw the potential for starting a new type of legacy.
This Legacy is not built on past forgotten recordings and albums, true they form a backdrop, but this project releases tracks that were recorded a long time ago, but have never been heard by the world at large. The first excellent expose of this is "Never Went Back", which is the title of the new album available here.
The album is to be released on Thursday 29th October, and contains acoustic versions of some of the tracks from the Splinter album. It captures the band as no other person has done unless you were lucky enough to see them live! A great two man band!
The tracks are powerfully sung, excellently played, ringed with great harmonies and truly excellent lyrics, it is a real joy and despite the wait for that 39 years, you need wait no longer, Splinter are back, and opening a brand new legacy.
This legacy is a new concept, with newly released music and it will form a very revealing history that will enrich this whole project, and bring Splinter back into the limelight, which has been too long in coming. Yes it has been much too long, but embrace this project and feel that you are part of a totally new concept. Its not bringing life to old recordings, it's bringing a new life to Splinter.
