MONTAIGNE - BECAUSE I LOVE YOU OUT NOW

LISTEN HERE

You may be one of the early adopters who's been onboard for the short but wild ride for a few years, soundtracked by the radio-seducing singles ‘I'm a Fantastic Wreck’, ‘Clip My Wings’ and ‘In the Dark’.

Or maybe you were instantly converted by Montaigne's attention-seizing guest spot on Hilltop Hoods double platinum No. 2 hit ‘1955’. Or saw her in the video for the song or singing it with Adelaide's finest on their sold-out arena tour this year.

And if you saw Boy & Bear's national jaunt over summer she was the young woman charming the more punctual members of the audience with her unmistakable voice. Other supports include Megan Washington, San Cisco and Japanese Wallpaper along with her sold-out single club tour as well as gracing the stage at festivals such as Groovin’ the Moo, Woodford, St Kilda.

However you got here, the journey's about to get serious with the release of Montaigne's debut album Glorious Heights in August this year.

Montaigne (born Jessica Cerro 20 years ago) is rolling out the welcome matt with the delightful new single ‘Because I Love You’.

It's a Trojan Horse - a wildly infectious pop tune hiding the post-mortem of a relationship.

Not just any relationship, Montaigne's first boyfriend.

"I think I was swept away because it was something that I hadn't experienced before,” she says. "It's that classic “love is blind” story. You're in it, everything makes sense, it seems great. There are moments of doubt but you brush it off. Then after you split you think 'Why the fuck did I let that happen?’

Like most of Glorious Heights, the single is filled with “Did she just sing that?” moments - they're all factual, from eating a vegan salad ("I feel strongly about a plant-based diet") to trying whiskey only to decide it tastes like "acetone" and summing up the initial rush of romantic feelings thus: "Hey, this isn't boring.” "He'll never hear it, he doesn't listen to contemporary music," Montaigne laughs. "There's confidentiality there. There are other people on the album who know the songs are about them, but we've made up now. This is just a historical account of what happened.”

Glorious Heights was produced and partly co-written with Tony Buchan (The Preatures, Andy Bull).

If you Google Montaigne you'll see her regularly compared to Regina Spektor, Marina and the Diamonds, Bjork, Florence & the Machine and St Vincent. It's not lazy journalism, she's down with that. "They are my influences, especially vocally. I've been compared to The National once, I was very happy with that. And Owen Pallett, I was so happy with that, he's in my Top 5 favourite artists. There's a lot of artists who influence me: Arcade Fire, Everything Everything, Coldplay, Sigur Ros, Depeche Mode, Talking Heads..it's a long list.”

‘1955’ has also seen her win over a new audience - hip hop fans - with the Hoods even giving her a shout out by name in the song's lyrics. "I never thought I'd hear my name in that context. It's great, but also so strange, I feel so hip hop even though I'm the antithesis of hip hop. But it's put me on the radar of a market that maybe wouldn't ordinarily be into my music. It's given me preliminary accessibility! The Hoods are like my big brothers now. They're the nicest people I've met in this industry who've achieved that level of success.”

Sick of beige pop music and musicians with nothing to say? Welcome to Montaigne.

MONTAIGNE DROPS NEW SINGLE AND TOUR ANNOUNCEMENT

If 2015 wasn’t busy enough for Montaigne, she’s made sure 2016 will be her biggest year yet, with the delivery of her newest single ‘In The Dark’, coinciding with the announcement of another national tour!

Again working with producer Tony Buchen (The Preatures, Andy Bull), ‘In The Dark’ exceeds all that you’ve come to expect from Montaigne. Quirky, percussion-heavy, and interlaced with bursts of brass, her unique and ever powerful voice is somehow even more commanding.

To celebrate the release of her bold new single, Montaigne will take her band back on the road this April for the In The Dark national tour, hitting up venues in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide.

Montaigne rounded off last year with a sold out national tour and is and is about to join Boy & Bear as the special guest for the Limit Of Love tour, playing at huge venues such as Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion and Brisbane’s Riverstage.

‘In The Dark’ – off Montaigne’s forthcoming album, due for release later in the year – is more sonically adventurous than even her previous single, the grandiose ‘Clip My Wings’, which amongst other accolades reached the coveted #1 most played slot on Triple J.

Nominated for NSW Voice of the Year in the AU Review’s Live Music Awards, Montaigne has proven herself to be one to watch in 2016.

IN THE DARK TOUR

Sydney avant-pop heroine, Montaigne has dropped her daring new single Clip My Wings, alongside the announcement of an extensive national tour kick starting at Jimmy’s Den in Perth on October 3, moving through to Mandurah, Sunshine Coast, Rockhampton, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Toowoomba and Mullumbimby before finishing up at the Gorgeous Festival in McLarenvale on November 28.

Co-written, produced and mixed by Tony Buchen (The Preatures, Andy Bull) and recorded at Albert Studios, Clip My Wings is about the value of autonomy and standing up for what you believe in. The single boasts a bigger sound for Montaigne and an even more opulent and dramatic melody than what we’ve heard from this vocally gifted songstress.

“Clip My Wings is about attempting to push back against your oppressors,” explains Montaigne. “I am resilient and have become more self-confident, I am less afraid to stand up for myself and my self-belief and I am expressing that through this song.”

Montaigne has established herself on the live circuit, recently supporting San Cisco, Megan Washington and electro phenomenon Japanese Wallpaper. In April she embarked on a sold-out national headline run and also graced stages at Groovin The Moo and Sydney's Come Together Festival. Next up Montaigne will tour Clip My Wings taking her band on the road: Naill Anderson (keys), Gus Gardiner (bass) and Miles Thomas (drums).

Tickets to the Clip My Wings national tour are on sale now. Clip My Wings is available for purchase now!.
