What to expect... The Safe Kings style is original, melodic, modern-folk. Stories, legends & observations from Cumbria & around the UK. A mix of upbeat songs with drive and energy, combined with heartfelt soaring ballads.
Mike Turnbull - tenor guitar, Suzanne Ambrose - double bass and Dave Pennington - cajon.
The Name... ‘Safe Kings’ is a play on my surname Turnbull. Our song 'Will I Save The King' from my first EP Circlet of Gold is by way of an introduction to myself, the story of the Turnbull family name and of course The Safe Kings...
...The story hails back to the time of Robert The Bruce. Whilst this king of Scotland was riding through villages in the Scots Border region in the early 1300’s, a bull had escaped and threatened to harm the king & his entourage. A local man named William of Rule wrestled the bull from the path of the king. Robert the Bruce re-named the man William Turn-e-bull and gave him land & riches as a reward. The name evolved to be Turnbull.
So... the band, will always be a band of Kings who will remain safe! (with me... whoever they are ; )
We play songs from the EP 2017 Circlet of Gold and album 2019 In So Small A Compass (produced by Lukas Drinkwater and features Ciaran Algar & Evan Carson), EP Courageous Tree 2020 & new album 2021, Two Kingdoms.
