"Welcome to 'Left/Right', the first in a series of five very special paintings from my hand and from my heart.
After selling more than one million albums over 9 years in a multi-platinum selling band, I found myself at a considerable crossroads with a big decision to make. One of the processes that helped me make this decision was to sketch out where I was currently, where I wanted to go and how I was going to get there. It all happened in a dreamlike state and there were five sketches. I realised I could paint this journey in my signature style so that my fans and I could share the steps of this journey together.
The first step is represented here in 'Left/Right'.
A car finds itself at a crossroad seemingly in the middle of nowhere. Flat tire, out of juice, end of the road, can't go any further. Done and dusted. I did actually have a car like this once, a shitty old 1979 Honda Civic which I had in my final year at drama school in Perth, Australia. I called him Gerald Fitz-Beaufort and he was awful. The car in this painting represents me at the time: Out of juice, flat-tyred, flat, tired, done in, end of the road. With a big decision to make - left or right?
All of my paintings now feature the stick-man. Admittedly, I am truly horrendous at painting and drawing people. But this is handy, because the Stickman is so simple and uncomplicated, I like to think that viewer can project themselves, anyone, or anything onto this figure. In my mind, he is something of an Everyperson. He represents the cross-road and the decision itself and whoever needs to make it, so in that way, he is me, he is you, he is everyone.
Back to the painting...
Here he is alone out there with a tired old vehicle which has reached the end of its road. An important decision to make. But it's not scary. Reflective and alone yes, lonely maybe, but not scary. Possibly even peaceful. Look at that gentle moon and stars, providing not only beauty but also lighting the way forward. And look all that light and warmth coming out of the car and all its memories which he gets to take with him. Even the fact that there is a road at all is comforting; it's not really in the middle of nowhere at all. 'Gee, wow! It's not as threatening as it first seems at all!' he maybe thinks to himself. He just needs to make a big decision. Good luck Stickman, it's time to head off into the night on your own. We'll see, we'll see...
2/5 in the series occurs within one minute of this scene here. I am ready to share that one soon, as I will with all five paintings when they are ready and 'ticked off the list'. The 3/5 is full of hope and solution. 4/5 and 5/5 will blow your mind. They are all plotted and sketched, I won't change anything about them along the way and one day i'll share the original sketches with you. I'd best get to work...
I hope you enjoy 'Left/Right' and I thank you for joining me on this exciting and new journey.
With love,
Lockie X"
