Karousel Music presents:

Pat Dam Smyth Presents...

Pat Dam Smyth + Samantha Whates + Gabriel Moreno + TAVIA

Karamel, London, GB

5
Entry Requirements: 15+, 18+ for alcohol

Tonight we kick off in earnest our Artist Curators Season with a night curated by our very own Pat Dam Smyth. Pat has invited fellow Karouseller Samantha Whates: an artist of such class and natural beauty you'll wonder how you didn't float up and off in to the ether in a puff of wonder. She has a new record and some equally magnificent extra projects coming this year. As well as being friends and stable mates, Samantha and Pat have also written some absolute belters - something that will see the light of day at some point for sure.

Joining them will be the remarkable Gabriel Moreno, bringing his inimitable brand of poetry and music, and visiting friend Tavia who is over from the US, and playing for us for the first time.

Pat's current tour comes to an end tonight, with the Yorkshire Post saying of last week's show:

"Every troubadour worth their salt should be able to intersperse lovingly crafted songs with interesting tales to bestow upon their live audience; hirsute Ulsterman Pat Dam Smyth can boast more than his fair share of both...Indeed tonight’s beguiling, sometimes eerie and frequently melancholic sound contrasts with the lush instrumentation prevalent on Smyth’s recorded material, yet proves equally alluring. With another of tonight’s new numbers and EP lead-off track ‘Juliette’, already garnering airplay on 6Music, expect Pat Dam Smyth’s star to brighten in the coming months."

Line Up

"Reminds me of Pink Floyd... epic!" - Cerys Matthews BBC 6Music "Brilliant stuff" - Lauren Laverne BBC 6Music "Furious and fierce... a little bit of My Morning Jacket, a little bit of Beck in there... and a little bit of Nick Cave too. Just the holy trinity really, isn’t it?" *- *RODDY HART, BBC RADIO SCOTLAND** "Pat Dam Smyth’s debut album, ‘The Great Divide’, was critically acclaimed upon its release in 2012… the new record’s first single ‘Juliette’ suggests that he should be expecting at least as much, if not more adulation". - CMU “… masterfully mournful... Cut from the same cloth of Nick Cave and John Grant... conjures Dark Side-era Pink Floyd in its braying brass and portentous, swaggering pop élan. THE THIN AIR

PAT DAM SMYTH’S 2016 saw him scorch through packed out sets at Reeperbahn Festival, The Great Escape and several London showcases including a sell-out in The Roundhouse’s Sackler Theatre for the MVT #Fightback benefit, as well as a thunderous Lexington show at the start of the year. In addition to his mini tour of Italy in the summer, the band delighted a capacity crowd at the Other Voices/End of The Trail in Dingle, Ireland in early December; and Pat was the star turn at the Belfast launch of Help Musicians Northern Ireland. As three piece lineups go, you’ll have to go a long way to find a bigger, more authentic sound. Without doubt the musician’s musician; now fans and industry alike are getting in line. This year sees Pat leave behind the lo-fi sound of his critically acclaimed The Great Divide, which was hailed as a modern masterpiece in his native Northern Ireland. It received critical acclaim further afield, from The Independent, Q magazine, Hotpress, The Irish Times, Rock Italia, BBC Radio 2 and BBC 6 music. The sound of new album ‘Kids’ was forged from the blooming relationship between co-writer, co-producer and drummer Chris McComish. KIDS is an expansive and bold record which has ‘classic’ tattooed all over it. It is an opus of life growing up in the Belfast of the Troubles: falling in and out of love; falling in and out of clubs and venues; and winding up anywhere around the world from Berlin to LA, Liverpool to London. Bomb scares and broken hearts; first, lost and everlasting loves; self discovery, self destruction; holding on and letting go. For fans of Nick Cave, John Grant, Timbre Timbre, Beck and Pink Floyd, it’s a must. A leading light in a new wave of exciting Northern Irish artists, Pat is already being cited as an influence by his peers, being quoted in the lyrics of the Northern Irish Music Prize winner Ciaran Lavery for one.

Conquers beautifully - The Independent I love it – a textbook Song For Guy recommendation' Guy Garvey, BBC 6 Music He has returned to create something beautiful... The Daily Mirror The Great Divide is amazing. It's musical storytelling at its finest... BBC A rare kind of truthful songwriting The Irish Times Epic - Female First Beautiful, with an acerbic bite - PRS Magazine An authentic masterpiece which never ceases to amaze... - Rock Italia Beautiful - **** – Stereoboard Intoxicating – 9/10 – Rhythm and Booze

“Just gorgeous” Tom Robinson, BBC 6Music “The most beautiful album...” Bob Harris, BBC Radio 2 “Daring and candid” Instrumental Blog

Samantha Whates is one of those rare artists that ignites little bonfires beneath your ribcage and sings you something about yourself while the fire burns. A voice so warm and pure you’d be forgiven for thinking you were out in the wind wrapped up in merino wool and drowning in chocolate. For fans of acts like First Aid Kit, Nina Nastasia, Laura Viers and Susanna And The Magical Orchestra, Samantha is a lost piece of the jigsaw. She writes songs in a way that is precisely hers: Musically moving where she wants to go whenever she feels like it, and sometimes never coming back; while all the time lyrically drawing you a map and walking along beside you through her story.

The much lauded Dark Nights Make For Brighter Days album, which she recorded live in a couple of days up in her native Scotland, is a sparkling, atmospheric, and emotionally brave record that drew nothing but praise from exactly the kind of people she’d want it from – Bob Harris opining on BBC Radio 2 that it was “...really, the most beautiful album...” and Tom Robinson on BBC 6 Music echoing the sentiment describing it as “... just gorgeous...”. Crucially, Samantha is one of those artists that also enjoys the endorsement of her peers, Mercury Music Prize nominee James Yorktson describing her as “a rare treat...” Live, she has that knack of tying a squadron of helium balloons to the more serious songs by being so irrepressible and likeable in the moments between them that you won’t be the first to leave the show feeling like you just met your new best friend.

Always in demand to guest on records, she featured again on Blue Rose Code’s Ballads of Peckham Rye, as well as various appearances with her friend and sometimes collaborator Josienne Clarke. Samantha was also asked to record the vocal for the Barclays Premier League YouAreFootball TV and online advertising campaign - winning Best Bespoke Music in Advertising at the Shots Awards. 2017 finally sees her back in the studio after some magical EP’s and a single with the legendary Chaps Choir to record a new, much anticipated full LP. Samantha was the first artist to join the Karousel Publishing Roster, and we're as excited as ever to be part of her team for her next record.

After a succesful debut EP in 2015. "Love & Decadence" (Amber Records) he is now recording his second album with The Quivering Poets which is set to be released in October 2017.

‘Everything Is Wrong’ was released on June 1st 2017. TAVIA is a singer-songwriter from Sacramento, CA with a unique gift for crafting musical stories about the tensions & freedoms of life. 'Everything Is Wrong' is an americana and pop record that reflects not only her unique gift as a storyteller but also her musical fluency as a singer and guitarist. TAVIA shares the same hometown that inspired country singer Lynn Anderson and hammond mastermind Jimmy Smith. From a young age, she was immersed in the historic scenery of wagons and wooden sidewalks, and soon began to craft her own stories against this evocative backdrop. Growing up she reached for the songbooks of Carole King, Joni Mitchell and Eva Cassidy. TAVIA has taken these influences and herself become one of those essential vocalists who reach their audience through sheer purity and grace. This EP is an unforgettable collection of solidarity songs, inspired by stories of grief and healing.

Fire & Smoke is a tall standing anthem that offers the reassurance of community when all seems lost, set apart by a breathtaking gospel choir in a country setting. Dixon is a poignant ballad inspired by the sights and sounds of the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon, CA, where both of TAVIA’s grandfathers were buried. Constructed around piano and a string quartet, it calls out to memories of loved ones with a signal of strength and understanding. ‘Everything Is Wrong’ is a musical body of work that is authentic and timeless and marks her arrival as a very special artist. The songs were recorded with TAVIA’s band in late 2016 in a church. Overdubs were tracked at Big Ego Studios in Long Beach. The EP was mastered by Pete Lyman at Infrasonic Sound in Los Angeles. His credits include: Jason Isbell, Chris Stapleton, Ben Harper, Lori McKenna, Fall Out Boy, Son Lux, Halsey & The Decemberists.
