New EP 'Time I Got Goin' out on 20th February 2020
HATS are excited to announce the release of their brand new 5 track EP 'Time I Got Goin'' on 20.02.2020, available on CD and digital formats including iTunes, Spotify, Amazon and Bandcamp.
House Above The Sun enter 2020 presenting a new collection of captivating tracks that explore the themes of discovering what is most valuable as we age and fight the hard, often invisible fights. Recorded aboard a ship at Soup Studios London by talented engineer Giles Barrett, the new EP incorporates analog for a warm finish and embraces its country soul influences with acoustic led arrangements and the notable addition of atmospheric lap steel. The new tracks also see the band experimenting further in the studio, adding an indie-folk and psychedelic dimension to their sound with mellotron strings, leslie speakers and the sensitive triumph of the trumpet.
Band leader and songwriter Jim Moreton explains his approach on this EP as aiming for simple song structures yet with colourful arrangements; ‘The aim was to produce shorter and simpler songs than on our previous record yet take a wider approach to instrumentation. The challenge was to make sure the sounds and parts served the melody and vibe of the songs well, not weighing down the tracks or killing the live feel’. This approach can be heard on ‘Small Town’, built around an incredibly simple but captivating lap steel hook that forms the basis for the vocal melody. Meanwhile, the title track ‘Time I Got Goin’ builds up musical layers gradually in each verse, from an acoustic second guitar played by drummer Davide Mongirulli to a fully orchestrated arrangement on mellotron strings and an elegant trumpet part played by special guest Sarah Woolfenden. ‘Trains’ kicks off the EP with an infectious and incessant rock n’ roll guitar riff, achieving a smooth yet pulsating groove, reminiscent of LA Woman by the Doors.
