Good Boy are three childhood friends who grew up together in the regional Queensland town of Bundaberg, before relocating to Brisbane and deciding to form a band on a whim. Since then Good Boy has quickly gained a reputation for their authentic and unpretentious approach to music and a knack for writing songs that capture the essence of being in your early 20's whilst growing up in modern Australia.
It’s been a big 12 months for Good Boy. In December 2015, the three-piece’s debut single “Transparency” was added to high rotation on triple j and ended up 15th most-played song on the youth broadcaster. In January 2016, the band was announced as winners of the triple j unearthed Laneway Festival competition, opening the Brisbane Laneway main stage to a huge crowd. In March, they released their debut EP “No Love For Back Home” to a massive amount of love from critics and fans alike, playing to capacity crowds in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane on their EP launch tour. They also supported Viet Cong, Homeshake, British India, The John Steel Singers, Jonathan Boulet, Velociraptor, Palms, Northeast Party House plus more. All before the band was a year old.
Now in their second year as a band, Good Boy have already released their second EP, Plum. Recorded with Cam Smith at Incremental Records (Velociraptor, Deafcult) and mixed and mastered by Mikey Young (Eddy Current Supression Ring, Dick Diver), the new EP is a definite evolution on the sound of their first release. Lead single “Poverty Line”, another high rotation triple j hit, is a 3 minute 30 second exploration of what it is to be a young person living in Australia at the moment; living below the poverty line, where cost of living gets higher but wages stay the same. “Millie” is the heartbreaking story of burying a beloved family dog and “Ya Mum’s Ya Dad” is a cutting criticism of everyday life in Australia with possibly the lyric of the year; “Just wanna lead a normal life. Have a couple of kids, have a couple of wives.”
After touring with Japandroids and ending 2016 in style playing Festival Of The Sun and Falls Festival, Good Boy have no plans to slow down, releasing a split 7 inch with Melbourne wunderkind Jarrow in April. It’s gonna be one hell of a year.
