Ewafe Project (Raising the Roof)- Michael Kiwanuka

Just before Christmas i met a friend named Olivia Barker who also happens to be my neighbour. Olivia set up a charity in 2009 after spending some time in Uganda volunteering. When i found out about her work and how young she was when she started it i was very inspired by her guts and determination. She was only 18 years old when she set it up with her friend Corrie Latham of the same age. The Charity has now gone from catering for 200 children to 4000 children in the city of Kampala. They've also gone on to win the 'Cosmopolitan Ultimate Woman of the Year Award'. The more i heard about it, the more i wanted to be involved in some way. My parents were born in Uganda and i have so much family over there so it's of course a place that is close to me. Before Christmas we put on a small house gig nearby and raised money to start building a home that would care for abandoned children in Kampala. I thought this was a cool idea. But it wasn't until i saw photos of the walls of this building that were put up through the money we raised from the gig that i knew how much we could do with with just a little effort. This really excited me so i wanted to put on another bigger gig, with friends to raise more money to get the roof finished off to this building, and to get closer to completing it. This particular project has become really dear to me and it's something I'm very passionate about. The gig is also on my birthday so it's something i'm very excited about. We're calling the night 'The Ewafe Project (raising the roof)'. Ewafe means 'Where we belong', a nice way to describe a home which is hopefully what we'll get closer to building after this gig. All the proceeds from this gig will go to the Kids Club Kampala Charity Ewafe Project.
