Die Flöte

A six-person slacker-rock outfit from Kraków, Poland. Die Flöte have been playing together for seven years now, and have released two records: 'Plusk EP' in 2011 and 'Pizza LP' a few months ago. Both have been embraced by critics and fans alike, especially 'Pizza', chosen by Beehype as one of the best Polish records of 2014, and highly praised by media outlets such as Gazeta Wyborcza (country's main 'high brow(ish)' daily newspaper), and many independent music blogs/websites.

Die Flöte's fanbase may not be huge, but it is loyal. Together with other young bands from Kraków's prolific Stajnia Sobieski collective, they've started gaining a cult-following in the past two years, and their importance in the independent, home-made, self-produced and self-released music community in Poland has been growing rapidly.

Die Flöte's music draws inspiration mostly from American '90s indie bands such as Pavement, Built to Spill or The Sea and Cake, but their musical influences are much broader than that - from Tropicalia, Kate Bush, K Records to the band's unanimous appreciation of cheesy Polish pop and Genesis. Despite their slacker style and sensibility, Die Flöte's songwriting is very careful and diverse, with all of the band members contributing to the process. The band's two vocalists create perhaps most of their musical tension: Michał Mierzwa with his penchant for unexplainable lyrics and powerful choruses, and Mateusz Tondera, with classical, music-schooled upbringing and his love of challenging compositions.

Die Flöte's favourite moment up to date is a gig they played on the main stage of last year's Off Festival , having been chosen by fans as one of only 3 bands, from over 200 applying, to open each day of the festival. That, and the fact they bumped into Slowdive during the soundcheck. Artur Rojek, the festival's artistic director named their performance among the ones that really impressed him that year.

The sorrows of entering adulthood will haunt humanity forever and, until a vent for these emotions comes with music of such clever slobs as Mac DeMarco or Die Flöte, it won’t become a trite subject. Light and brilliant songwriting of “Pizza”, the debut album from Cracow sextet Die Flöte, has its roots in masterful work of The Sea and Cake. And even Morrissey wouldn’t be ashamed of some of the lines from the album. - Marta Słomka, Beehype
