Yasmin Coe @ The Sesh Review - 24/09/19
Yasmin Coe is a name very well recognised in Hull, having done 13 BBC sessions and interviews over her teenage career. Personally, I've been a fan since a saw her solo set down at The New Adelphi supporting The Avenues. Having recently (or so I'm aware) becoming backed by a band, I was pleasantly surprised to see the delicious melodies and indie-pop I had seen before transformed by crackling distortion, wah-wah pedals running rampant, a thick grounded bassline to give gravity to the mix and then the delicious melodies aforementioned placed on top like a cherry.
'Smoke' (her 2017 release) is definitely her sing-along anthem in my opinion and was always going to be one of the stand out songs going in for me because of its glittering golden hook. But the energy given off by her guitarist (who I thought was going to fall over the entire set), her bassist and Yasmin herself, I was sold on the transition from solo to a backed singer-songwriter.
I still think there is a little bit to go with Yasmin feeling fully comfortable in owning the front-women role and developing her own strong and unique voice (just like Anteros and Lucia have done before her), but I think that will come in time. In the meantime, her shows are fun, the melodies delight my sweet tooth and I will not be getting 'Smoke' out my head for a few days.
