Backyard Casino - Come Through With The Lightning (single review)
Backyard Casino's ultimate selling point on this track is their ability to inject some rock 'n' roll flavour into the indie formula.
Backyard Casino presents a significant improvement on their previous single Line by Line. They still swagger around with thick northern accents, witty lyrics and a parade of their rock influences. This time around, however, the instruments have a bit more room to flourish than Line by Line. Come Through With The Lightning starts with a lo-fi blues riffs on the right side of the mix, then the bass sets a brooding tone before the snare/tom combo comes in. The assembling of these techniques propels the songs with a foot-tapping rhythm.
Ultimately, the song offers less immediate hooks than Line by Line, but I think this is certainly to the benefit of Come Through With The Lightning. It is nice to hear an indie-rock band take a bit more time before the deciding to ramp it up a gear and thus, they naturally feel more confident than before. Backyard Casino's ultimate selling point on this track is their ability to add some rock 'n' roll flavour to the indie formula. The extended solo drips with conviction, the bass permeates the aforementioned blues riff in all the right parts and they manage to extend a catchy tune which can hold your attention for five minutes.
I feel that Come Through With The Lightning could be improved significantly with some vocal harmonies from the other members of the band to add some textual flavour in the chorus'. Furthermore, I think that James McEwan should take some tips on vocal delivery from the Nick Caves and the Tom Waits of this world to add a bit of sneer and grit to his performance in this track, this would help to really nail the passion that this song is screaming out for.
Although they are still discovering their sonic identity in their recordings, their live sets do have some avidity and energy which always makes a band enticing enough check them out if you see their name on any posters. They're a band which I think have a lot of potential and I can't wait to see them improving and moving more and more away from the indie-formula.
