Will Henderson, Guitarist
Sydney based Will Henderson is one of Australia’s most exciting up and coming classical, flamenco and jazz guitarists. Topping the state in music for his final HSC exams, Will was chosen to perform solo in the Sydney Opera House for the Encore concert 2006. After winning countless regional competitions (Including The David Helfgott Scholarships) and Eisteddfod's, Will moved to Sydney to continue his promising career as a guitarist. Currently Completing a Bachelor of Music majoring in performance at the Sydney Conservatorium, Will attributes his versatility and passion to a musical upbringing through the Suzuki Method.
Will Began studying the classical guitar in 2000 with teachers including Steven Tafra, Tony Dawson, Karin Braidwood, and Raffaele Agostino, and is inspired by the delicate and moving aspects of the repertoire. He regularly plays solo in concert halls, art galleries, churches and cafes all around Sydney. Will has always been interested in making classical music more accessible and was lucky to find good friends at the Sydney Conservatorium who shared this ideal. He started arranging pop tunes classically with his corporate group Flipside which eventually lead to the development of the band Aston. With this group he has recorded a self titled album at Studio 301, performed for the Gourmet traveller, Cleo bachelor of the year and Instyle magazine awards and has recently signed to Warner records under the management of Scorpio music.
His future motivation in the area of classical music revolves around musical therapy and composition.
Will has always been drawn to the raw power, energy and beauty of flamenco. After meeting and learning from Gerard Mapstone at a Sydney guitar summer school in 2006, Will’s passion for flamenco has lead to him travelling Australia to study with Australia’s best flamenco guitarists including; Gerard Mapstone, Damian Wright, Aloysius Leeson and Gregorio Alfonzetti. His flamenco trio Los Tres Monos has been very successful regularly playing throughout the city including The Spanish Club, The Basement and Opera Bar. They also play annually in Perisher during the snow season and at the Bellingen Flamenco Festival, Candelo Village Festival and Viva La Vida Festival. Will currently accompanies dancers at the prestigious Diana Reye's Flamenco Company under the tuition of Felipe Kunz and Karl Krebs.
Jazz is also a strong facet of Will’s musicality, as he partakes in many of the jazz classes and ensembles at the Sydney Conservatorium. He has studied under Guy Strazzulo, Steve Mckenna and currently Steve Brian, which has lead to him being a unique and versatile session player, playing regularly in most of Sydney’s larger live venues including; The Sound Lounge, The Annandale, 505, The Vanguard, Quirkz, Home Night-club and The Basement. He regularly performs with Brazilian, tango, Latin and Manouche groups and has been featured live to air on ABC classic fm both as a solo artist and as a guest in various ensembles.
Will has been teaching privately for 5 years and has been the guitar tutor at Camp Creative 2008 alongside fellow guitarist, great friend and mentor Anthony Garcia.
He currently performs with Los Tres Monos, The Conscious Pilots and Aston.
