The Penny Black Remedy's symbiance of darkly comic and unfeasibly high energy, theatrical and intensely dynamic live shows have been wowing audiences and promoters where ever they play. On the strength of said live performances and absurdly catchy songs the band has recently earned the accolade as Best Alternative Act for the UK Indy Music Awards 2008 held at a packed out Kentish Town Forum in London.
Scottish singer/songwriter/general fantasist, Keith M Thomson cultivated the idea of forming a band of international musicians with a view of creating the hybrid of Country, Punk and Balkan Folk he had had inspiring him for some time; ‘Drink has often given me the courage to pursue my many day dreams, some with positive results, others less so. Luckily, this time proved to be positively glorious.'
It was two years ago, after making the move to North London, that Keith had nothing short of the serendipitous good fortune to come into contact (through somewhat nefarious means) with exactly the group of equally as easily bewildered souls he had always dreamed of working with.
Introducing the band: The Penny Black Remedy consists of Keith M Thomson on vocals, guitars and song-writing duties, the intoxicatingly jazzy, classically trained, mildly dyspraxic Croatian vocalist/percussionist Marijana Radcliffe and of course the powerhouse rhythm section of both human metronome/pleasingly overly-organised Dutch drummer Wilco Van Eijk and the mysterious man in the hat/always the last one to leave the pub groove machine that is bass player Steve Nelson, from London, England; As Keith puts it, ‘It was glaringly obvious from our very first rehearsal that this was not only going to work unimaginably well musically, but that we shared a similar passion, drive, sense of humour and an uncanny collective ability to still perform whilst drunk.'
Keith ponders, ‘We're just trying to take people back to the days when you can have a good old fashioned sing-song and a knees up around either a camp fire or an old piano. The fact that most of my songs are about death, lost love, brothels or just trying to live in a constant state of crippling paranoid fear and cope with the daily grind of everyday life is irrelevant. I think.'
The Penny Black Remedy's immediate plans are to continue bowling over crowds in the UK, whilst rehearsing material for their eagerly awaited debut album. The as yet to be named album will be recorded in Croatia during summer due for release later in the year.
