Music Glue - The Band Is The Brand

Panther Makes Music

Melbourne, Australia's singer/composer/instrumentalist Anthea Eadan’s passion for music was born the moment she could reach the Pianola peddles in the dining room. She continued in the late 90s exploring music & musicology as a part of her studies in the International Baccalaureate, at Lauriston - being awarded the harpsichord scholarship and working towards becoming a concert pianist through the tutorage of Michael Spivakovsky.

Fate changed her direction and she moved to Fitzroy, taking up several residencies around the area performing solo guitar songs, often accompanied by Jeff from Juju on the Sitar and Simo on Congo, using her Breville Tranquil Moments for atmospheric effects. Occasionally Anthea would drink red wine with the Poets at the Punters Bar on Brunswick Street, who chose to call her Panther.

Humidity called, and Anthea moved to Brisbane in 2001. Surprisingly, unrelated to the Fitzroy Poets, Panther again became her nickname from friends and musical mentors – and aptly describes her stage persona after gaining her prized Rosewood Fender Telecaster, loop station and Boss DS6 digital delay.

During this time she became friends with Brisbane’s Producer/Drummer/Inspiration Skritch (Mary Trembles, The Beasts of Bourbon, Tex Perkins & the Dark Horses, Gota Cola and Brokenhead amongst so many others) who, during a phone call whilst on tour in New York, gracefully encouraged Panther to get a Powerbook G4 & Protools. Alongside the Telecaster, her Mac and Tools have since become Panther’s best friends.

Panther supported several acts in Australia during this time including Missy Higgins, Pete Murray, Diana Arnaid and Christine Anu.  Towards the end of her stay in Brisbane she recorded with Ian Hoags (Powderfinger) and Matt Murphy (The Informants) at Airlock Studio.

In 2005, Panther packed her backs and set off on her UK adventure having always been inspired by the Bristol sound. Panther worked with Jim Barr (Portishead), did a Dub mix of “Light My Fire” released in 2006 through the Dub from Atlantis Crew, and worked with Bath and Bristol based producers Throwing Snow and Sobr on her tune “Stranger Friends” which was released through the label “A Future Without” in 2007.

Panther performed at London’s Mean Fiddlers “The Borderline” & infamous “Globe”, as well as “Monkey Chews” in Chalk Farm - recorded by the boys from Ninja Tunes.  In Bristol Panther would regularly gig at “Mr Wolf’s”, “The Thekla”, headlined at “The Fleece” and several festivals in Somerset, Devon and the wonderful “Longest Day Festival” in Brighton. Panther supported various UK artists such as Tom Vek at “The Louisianna”, because of the loop based samples, and vocal dubbing effects she includes in her performances due to her electronic fascination. During her Bristol time she was drawn to Neil Davidge (Massive Attack) as an amazing friend, source of inspiration, support and mentorship with her vocal style.

Over Christmas of 2008, Panther returned to Brisbane and the time was finally right for Panther & Skritch to create  an album together, inspired by the influences and experiences Bristol had upon Panther and Skritch’s own travels to Nashville, LA and New York over the recent years with his projects The Beasts of Bourbon and Mary Trembles. Creating a genre unique to the collaborators of organic, digital and the ever so slightly random.

The project has simply taken the name Panther makes Music –
because that’s precisely what Panther does...
