‘We’re not NME or Q and we don’t cover music but MidiMidis pricked the PSW ears when they revealed that their music is comprised of midi samples from old retro video games’
Ian Dean PSW Editor
MidiMidis are two brothers-in-law who spend an obsessive amount of time in various bedrooms experimenting with retro MIDI and 8bit sounds from the likes of their
AMSTRAD CPC 464 and ZX SPECTRUM. They are the only band who composes all of their songs using 8bit and MIDI whilst adding late 70's New-York style guitars and crooning vocals.
MidiMidis’ first demo: ‘note-to-self’ was self-released worldwide on iTunes on 25th February 2008 with physical hand-made copies available but limited to just 200 now sold out copies. Within two weeks of finishing their demo, MidiMidis gained airplay on XFM by
Jon Kennedy, Eddy Temple-Morris, on BBC RADIO 1 by Huw Stephens, and on BBC RADIO 6 MUSIC by Tom Robinson as well as on BBC Berks. The lads became the first band ever to be featured in a Video-game magazine, namely PSW (PlayStation World).
The two brothers have just self-released an EP entitled ‘Mayuko.’ The 5-track EP features two tracks produced by Tom Bellamy (Losers/ The Cooper Temple Clause) and two tracks produced by Mr Fogg, as well as the now infamous MySpace remix by Tom Bellamy which has already resulted in the band being hotly tipped as the ones to watch in 2009 by XFM's Eddy Temple-Morris.
Both Tom Bellamy and Mr Fogg have cleverly grasped the MidiMidis unique sound which can best be described as The Strokes bumping into Sonic Youth on your old SNES. The innovative sounds contained within the tracks on ‘Mayuko.’ have lead to Eddy Temple-Morris making both ‘nothing means anything’ and ‘nemesis’ tracks of the week on XFM’s THE REMIX show for three consecutive weeks.
MidiMidis made their festival debut at Tignesfest 2009 with Losers for XFM in April. ‘Mayuko.’ is out now only through MySpace and limited to 250 copies. The played a storming set at The Secret Garden Party 2009 as well as performing with Losers on the main stage of Glade Festival and are playing the explosive Losers vs. MidiMidis remix live at Matter (O2) in September.
