Look, Stranger! only formed in 2009, but nevertheless have a wealth of experience behind them. Drummer Thom Hosken has played for Laura Marling, King Charles and Cherbourg, singer/guitarist Tim Sheinman with Charlie Fink of Noah and the Whale and bassist Ali Wedderburn and keyboardist David Isaacs with symphonic-pop band The Dialogue. The most cursory of listens to Look, Stranger! however reveals a completely different beast. Though pop melody and songwriting remains at the core of each song, electronic beats skitter over the top of tracks like 'Shake Hands, Say Hello' whilst the rhythm section pushes and drives below - "tracks that make you want to move and be moved" - in the words of We.Are.A.Fever. Björk, post-millennial Radiohead, Talking Heads, Grizzly Bear and Os Mutantes are perhaps the most obvious points of comparison, but yet Look, Stranger! remain very much a pop band at heart. 'Where Horses Roam' is based around a raucous, pulsing, unforgettable hook that "infiltrated my head for far too long" (London Tour Dates), whilst the rich harmony and soaring melody of 'To The River' and 'The Rectory' show a band reaching further than most others aim.
Look, Stranger! have gigged heavily around London, supporting bands including Clock Opera and headlining venues including the Relentless Garage, The Troubadour, Barfly, Fierce Panda Records' 'Dirt Kiss The' night at Catch and 93ft East, who made them 'band of the month' on their website and described their attic-recorded demo as "the best demo we've heard in a LONG time...the best band you've never heard of".
Since then Look, Stranger! have graduated from amateur bedroom recordings to working with Charles 'Chicky' Reeves (Radiohead, Bjork, Grace Jones) on tracks which have garnered plays on BBC6 Music and online radio as well as dancefloors including that of Fleur-De-Lys at The Lexington. Their 2010 self-titled EP, featuring a resplendent grouse on its cover, is available for iTunes download. Restlessly creative, Look, Stranger! may not be the best band "you've never heard of" for much longer.
