John Egenes is truly a part of the strong legacy handed down by the songwriters of the American Southwest. From Santa Fe, New Mexico, Egenes has spent his years on the road and in the studio backing some of the best representatives of the craft. An excellent guitar player, he is also a first class multi-instrumentalist (guitar, mandolin, bass, mandola, dobro, pedal steel, fiddle, lap steel, piano, accordion, harmonica, cuatro, musical saw), and has performed and recorded with a range of artists that includes Eliza Gilkyson, Bill & Bonnie Hearne, Tish Hinojosa, Gary P. Nunn, Jono Manson, Jaime Michaels, The Buckarettes, and many others. An award-winning producer, Egenes seems to be at ease wearing a number of musical hats, in and out of the recording studio.
He has shared the stage and played with a wide variety of musicians, including Pete Seeger, Guy Clarke, Lyle Lovett, Nanci Griffith, Townes van Zandt, Lynn Anderson, Jerry Jeff Walker, Greg Brown, Leo Kotke, Iris Dement, Bonnie Raitt and many more. His New Zealand credits include work with artists such as Anji Sami, Kylie Harris, The Verlaines, The Sami Sisters, Hannah Curwood, Kylie Harris, The Oxo Cubans, The Chaps, Hannah Howes and more.
Egenes lectures in contemporary music and technology at the University of Otago in Dunedin. He is currently immersed in the remix culture, doing his best to drag folk music into the twenty-first century.
