There are three young women in Madrid who cannot be stopped. Their voices are tickets to far away places and their instruments and melodies wrap you up in colorful memories. They form a band called Boat Beam. You may have heard murmurs of their name. If you haven´t yet, this definitely won´t be the last time. Boat Beam is the sum of Josephine, Alisha and Aurora. An Australian, an American and a young Spanish woman. It´s a band that threads together the strings of a guitar, a viola, a cello and a piano, making music that whispers of Debussy and Satie but also envelopes like the Cinematic Orchestra and strides like The Shins. They bring to mind the likes of Fiona Apple and Tori Amos, or what Sylvia Plath would have sung had she dedicated herself to it. Boat Beam is inspired by the music of Jóhann Jóhannson, The Dresden Dolls and Sufjan Stevens but also finds its origins in many other exquisite things. Their songs are fed by their experiences. Their music sounds of books, movies, travelling, life. Josephine arrived to live in Madrid in 2006 after having passed through half the world as a traveller, playing with various indie bands in Australia and England. In Spain she happened on Alisha, who had been making her viola work hard in orchestras and bands in Atlanta, US before being drawn to Spain by the desire to experience a different life. They played together and at one of their concerts collided with Aurora, a talented cellist who had played with prominent Spanish groups and who, by chance, was looking to create her own band. The three formed a circle that some might call miraculous, destined, or at the very least, highly original. Since bringing their talents and efforts together, everything has changed in the underground music scene of Spain. Rumours can be heard about a group that fills venues with a magic atmosphere. New fans publish online, captivated by the excitement of discovering something big. The contagious energy and emotion of their voices is nearly tactile. But it´s no longer just a rumour, and no longer is it underground. Boat Beam are releasing their first record and everyone will be able to test the truth of the rumours and blogs... There are three chicas en Madrid who create pop music - classical and modern, soothing and edgy - which captivates from the start of the first verse. And they won’t be stopping for a while.
