Music Glue - The Band Is The Brand

Barbie Bangkok

Somewhere in the Indian Summer of 2002 Barbie Bangkok made their live debut. Right away, their innovating songs stole the hearts of many. The Ghent-based label Kinky Star was impressed enough to release their first EP (which contained such singles as 'Roll Rockin'' and 'Oh My God') and that same year the band reached the finals of Humo's Rock Rally, Belgium's legendary band contest which also served as the starting point of such bands as dEUS, Evil Superstars and Das Pop.

After all this, the group decided to focus on the next important step: writing and recording their debut album. They found the right man for the job in Frans Hagenaars, a Dutch producer who began his career in the 90's and produced such records as 'Palomine' by Bettie Serveert. Recording sessions began at the start of 2007 and soon enough the band and Hagenaars had rounded up and crystallized 13 songs - enough to form a strong debut album which was christened 'People and Geometry'. The album is filled with catchy songs, groovy pop-rock with a healthy dose of humour which reminds one of They Might be Giants, early Bowie and Talking Heads in their prime, while at the same time keeping their feet firmly in the here and now.

Now, more than ever, Barbie Bangkok is ready for the real stuff. The first single 'People & Geometry' has been received with positive acclaim. It is time again to reclaim the stage.

Press about 'People and Geometry':

"We hear playful and capricious but always catchy guitar-popsongs: sometimes driven by a cowbell ('New Delhi'), other times by a jittery riff  à la XTC ('El Saviour') or constantly changing rhythms in the best Talking Heads tradition. A very enjoyably record." - Focus Knack

"'People and Geometry" is a vey consisten record. 'Tender Irony', 'New Delhi', 'Hot and Trendy', 'El Saviour'... one by one true pop gems that stay inside your head....." - Rif Raf
